The Mayne Football Club would like to acknowledge the passing of Past President Terry Smith. Terry passed away peacefully last Saturday 17th September 2022 aged 83 years. He had not been well for some time with his health failing over the last twelve months.
Terry came to Mayne in the late 1960’s as a mature age player from Windsor Zillmere. After forming a bond with many Tigers at the time he went on to join the Banyo Bloods in their first year in 1970. Terry was highly regarded for his leadership capability and was in contention to take on the Bloods Senior Coaching role in 1972 but the position ultimately went to an up and coming former Clem Ryan Medallist and Mayne Rover Peter Cubis.
After finishing his playing days at the Bloods Terry moved back to Mayne and will be remembered fondly as a hard working administrator and volunteer for the Tigers through the 1980’s and 90’s where he served for a long period on the Committee including as Club Secretary in 1983 and 1984, following up as President in 1985 and 1986. Terry and his fellow Committee oversaw one of the club’s very successful periods off field and on field where the club attained a Senior Premiership in 1982, Under 19 Premierships in 1981, 1985 and 1986 as well as an Under 17 Premiership in 1985.
Terry’s daughter Nicole recalls fond memories of being at the old club at Keith Beavis Oval where like a lot of children of club administrators they were called upon to help in canteens and various other roles all in the name of the Mayne Tigers. Nicole also recalls her father being the Ground Announcer as well as performing many other jobs on game day and on behalf of the club.
Terry and his wife Judy have been consistent supporters of the club up until recently when he fell ill always providing annual donations to support his beloved Tigers.
A celebration of Terry’s life will be held this Friday 23rd September 2022 at 1.30pm at the Garden Chapel, Albany Creek Crematorium followed by a wake at the Ferny Grove Bowls Club from 3pm to 6pm.
The Mayne Tigers extends their deepest sympathy to Terry’s wife Judy, daughters Nicole and Kylie and all of their respective families and friends.
