The Mayne Football Club would like to acknowledge the passing of one of their favourite servants, Premiership Player, long term Committee person and volunteer in Ewan “Macca MacDonald.
Macca will be remembered for his part in the famous 1958 Premiership team coached by Ron Wilson and Captained by Alex McGill.
Macca had always been a Mayne boy playing through the Juniors Captaining an amazing Under 14 Premiership in 1953 after an extraordinary two Grand Final replays.
He will be fondly remembered for his endless support of the Tigers for many years following the end of his playing days always prepared to do whatever it took to keep the Tiger flag flying. He was also a great friend to many, generous with his time and always willing to share a kind word.
The following excerpt from the Courier Mail was kindly forwarded thanks to Bill Baker and Merle Dawe who both have fond memories of their friend.
Courier Mail Dated 25/10/2022
Macca passed away peacefully after a recent fall and a short illness, having lived a life longer than I think he expected. From Premiership winning AFL player from Mayne to merchant seaman to working the wharves as a fitter and turner, he enjoyed his mates at the Lazy Layabouts, who I am sure will raise a glass in his memory. As a lifelong passionate fisherman we are sure he could remember every fish he caught, every bait he used, every mate he fished with and every beer he drank. A passionate reader of thrillers who would love nothing more than long days amongst his books he will be missed by his children, grandchildren and especially his favourite Poppy. Never one to make a fuss he specifically asked for no funeral or service of any kind. We will however return him to his favourite place, on the beach at Point Lookout.
The Mayne Football wishes to pass on their sympathy and kindest regards to Macca’s family and friends recognising his sad passing.
