The Mayne Tigers would like to acknowledge the passing of dual premiership player Barry Stapleton. Barry passed away last Tuesday, aged 84, six week’s after receiving a terminal diagnosis of duodenal cancer.
Barry is one of the heroes from the golden era of the 1960’s for the Mayne Tigers being a member of the 1962 and 1966 premiership teams. Barry was recruited by Tiger legend Noel Best as a rugged defender taking up a half back flank role in an impenetrable men’s department.
Barry’s younger brother Bernie, a premiership player in the 1966 and 1967 premiership teams passed away last year capping off a sad period for the family and many Tiger players and supporters from this wonderful period for the club.
Barry has been a regular at the Mayne Tiger’s reunions along with many of the remaining members of the premiership teams from the early 1960’s. The Tigers remarkably were premiers in 1958, 1961, 1962, 1966 and 1967. They were also runners up in 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1968 with the Stapleton brothers playing a strong part during this dominant period.
The usual reunion of mates from the 1961 and 1962 premiership teams will take place at the Breakfast Creek Hotel this Wednesday lunch time which will no doubt include the raising of a glass to their much loved team mate.
There will be a celebration of Barry’s life held on Tuesday 8th October 2024 at 12.30pm at Pinaroo Lawn Cemetery.
The Mayne Football Club extends their deepest condolences to Barry’s wife Veronica and their family and friends at this sad time.
