Mayne AFC

Vale Alan "Marbuk" Walters

The Mayne Football Club would like to acknowledge the passing of Hall of Fame Member Alan “Marbuk” Walters who passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon, Thursday 6 February 2025, in the Caboolture hospital.

Kerri, one of Alan’s daughters and his wife Wendy were both present. Alan had been sick for some time but was hanging in with his strong will and determination. Marbuk was very well known in the Brisbane and Queensland Australian football fraternity.

Alan was a very talented Mayne junior progressing through the ranks winning the under 17 best and fairest awards in 1967 and 68. He developed into a very talented power forward and played for Queensland in 1970 and topped the Mayne A grade goal kickers that year with 81 goals.

His A grade Queensland representative career may have been cut short due to his call up to national service, however he represented the Australian Army in their annual clash with the other forces which once again demonstrated his pure football ability.

The big fella had a wonderful pair of hands, was a great kick for goal once kicking 10 against Windsor Zillmere at the Gabba. He also coached the Mayne Reserves in 1978.

In 1975, Alan went to the Tigers satellite club Banyo as Captain Coach culminating in a premiership flag that year. He then coached Banyo for another two years when they were promoted to Division 1 making the finals in the first year and winning the SQAFA goal kicking award in 1976.

Lifelong friend and team mate Rod Judd recalls that Banyo can also thank Alan for bringing the well known Tiger volunteer, Cyril Strelow, another Mayne Hall of Fame Member, to the club.  Cyril’s record as a Banyo Life Member is well known to all.

Juddy, along with Peter Cubis, Steve Secombe and many old Mayne and Banyo team mates have maintained their close contact and friendship with Marbuk since they were juniors evidencing the bonds that were formed so many years ago. They, along with many other team mates and friends from the Tigers and Bloods who were much the better for Marbuk’s presence in their lives will be shedding a tear and raising a glass today.

Kerri advised that Alan didn’t want a funeral service as such however the family is planning a get together to celebrate Alan’s life probably at Bribie in the near future (to be advised).

The Mayne Football Club wishes to express their deepest sympathy to Wendy and her family at this time.
